The Cebu Provincial Government has placed its disaster response mechanisms on alert and is preparing possible assistance for communities affected by a powerful earthquake that struck Mindanao on Monday, June 8.
In a statement issued after the earthquake, Gov. Pam Baricuatro said she had instructed the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) to closely monitor developments and maintain coordination with local disaster offices across Cebu for a more unified response.
“I have also instructed our PDRRMO to reach out to the disaster management authorities in General Santos City and other affected areas to determine how the Province of Cebu may assist should help be needed,” she wrote.
According to reports, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake occurred off the coast of General Santos City in Sarangani Province, located at the southernmost tip of Mindanao, prompting tsunami warnings in the Philippines, Indonesia, and Japan.
Even as Cebu remains unaffected by the earthquake, based on current reports, the governor urged residents to exercise vigilance, heed official advisories, and prepare for potential aftershocks.
Gov. Baricuatro emphasized the importance of solidarity and cooperation during times of crisis, assuring affected communities that Cebu stands ready to extend support if needed.
