The Cebu Provincial Hospital (CPH) Danao has successfully performed its first-ever total hip replacement surgery, marking a significant milestone in the expansion of specialized orthopedic services within Cebu’s provincial healthcare system.
Capitol Piso Health Consultant Dr. Nikki Catalan, in her Facebook post, said that the historic procedure was conducted on June 5 on a 36-year-old female patient diagnosed with avascular necrosis (AVN), a condition that causes the death of bone tissue due to a lack of blood supply. The patient’s condition developed as a complication of long-term steroid treatment for Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE).
The surgery, known medically as Total Hip Arthroplasty or Total Hip Replacement, involved removing the damaged hip joint and replacing it with an artificial implant. The procedure is designed to relieve pain, restore mobility and improve a patient’s overall quality of life.
The procedure would normally cost around ₱500,000, including the implant and professional fees of the attending physicians. However, the patient received the surgery free of charge and did not shoulder any of the expenses.
Dr. Catalan described the successful operation as a landmark achievement for CPH Danao and a major step toward making advanced orthopedic care more accessible to residents of Cebu.
“Services that were once available only in a limited number of medical centers are now becoming more accessible through Capitol-run hospitals,” she said. “This allows more patients to receive specialized treatment closer to their homes and families.”
The achievement forms part of the administration of Gov. Pam Baricuatro’s continuing efforts to strengthen orthopedic services across its network of hospitals.
Cebu Provincial Hospital Balamban and Cebu Provincial Hospital Bogo already have orthopedic specialists serving patients, and the latest milestone positions CPH Danao among the growing number of provincial facilities capable of performing increasingly advanced orthopedic procedures.
Dr. Catalan said the successful surgery reflects ongoing investments in specialized medical services and reinforces the province’s commitment to expanding quality healthcare access for all Cebuanos.
She recognized the orthopedic surgeons, anesthesiologists, operating room staff, nurses, rehabilitation personnel, hospital administrators and support teams whose collaboration made the procedure possible.
Dr. Catalan said that beyond being a hospital first, the successful surgery represents a greater effort to bring quality, specialized healthcare closer to communities throughout Cebu, ensuring that patients can receive advanced treatment without having to travel far from home.
