Gov. Pamela Baricuatro and Fourth District Congressman Sun Shimura are advancing key infrastructure projects aimed at boosting economic growth and connectivity in Northern Cebu.
Among the projects being pursued are a north-to-south coastal road, a proposed airport in Medellin, and a world-class sports complex in Bogo City.
Gov. Baricuatro said the Provincial Government is prioritizing strategic infrastructure investments in the Fourth District to drive economic growth, generate more jobs, and help communities recover and move forward following the recent earthquake.
“Mao gyud na among conversation ni Cong. Shimura. Kinahanglan natong tagaan og infrastructure ang Fourth District aron magpadayon ang development diri. Dili ni nato pwede pabayaan. Kay kami sa kapitolyo willing mi nga mubutang og infrastruktura diri… Ang provincial government naa ra gyud nagpaluyo ninyo,” Gov. Baricuatro said on Wednesday during the distribution of calamity aid to households of Bogo City whose homes were completely destroyed during the earthquake last year.
The governor also shared plans to study the construction of what could become Cebu’s largest sports complex, modeled after the Clark sports hub in Pampanga, with Bogo City being considered as a potential site. The project was initially proposed for Naga City and remains under feasibility assessment.
“We are planning to build the biggest sports center diri sa Sugbo, mura og Clark City sa Pampanga — world-class gyud. This is the same one in Naga, but ni-offer man sad diri sa Bogo … and also since we’re looking at building an airport in Medellin,” she added.
Despite concerns over earthquake activity in parts of Northern Cebu, Baricuatro stressed that development initiatives should continue while ensuring that infrastructure projects are designed to withstand natural hazards.
“That’s also a consideration — ang soil diri sa Bogo, but it shouldn’t deter development. Like Japan, they learned to live with it. Ang kaning ilang earthquake and aftershocks, that’s something people here should learn to live with,” the governor continued.
Gov. Baricuatro also disclosed that Shimura’s proposal for a north-to-south coastal road has already been endorsed by the Regional Development Council and has secured funding for a feasibility study.
Meanwhile, Shimura emphasized the economic opportunities that the proposed coastal road, airport, and other infrastructure projects would bring to Northern Cebu.
According to him, the coastal road would improve connectivity and ease traffic congestion, while enhanced transportation infrastructure would attract investors and businesses to the area.
“As the father of the district, development gyud ang atong direction. Imagine a highway along the coastline from north to south. Dili na kinahanglan moagi sa tunga nga grabe na ka huot. This will open up the economy sa tibuok probinsya, ilabi na gyud dinhi sa Norte. Mag-sunod na ang mga investors or negosyante og sulod og naa na ang nindot nga transportation,” Shimura said.
The Provincial Government and the Fourth District congressional office continue to coordinate on the planning and development of these projects as part of their shared vision for a more connected and progressive Northern Cebu.
