Farmers and fisherfolk in Cebu province will soon have direct-selling hubs in three localities under a P13.3-million provincial government project aimed at improving market access for local producers and lowering food costs for consumers.

Provincial Agriculturist Roldan Saragena said the Capitol will establish People’s Food Centers in Danao City, Carcar City, and the town of Medellin, where farmers and fisherfolk can sell their products directly to consumers without going through middlemen.
“Mismo jud ang mag-uuma jud ang mamaligya, dili ta moagi’g middleman,” Saragena said, stressing that only legitimate farmers and fisherfolk would be allowed to sell at the centers, while traders would be prohibited.
Saragena said many farmers currently sell their goods in makeshift spaces exposed to harsh weather conditions.
“Kung mag-uwan, luoy kaayo. At least diri naa sila inside the room,” he said.

He added that vendors would not be charged rental fees for the stalls, although stall assignments would operate on a rotation system among qualified sellers.
Each facility is expected to host around 30 vendors daily, composed of approximately 20 farmers and 10 fisherfolk, depending on the availability of produce and catch.
Daily operations will be overseen by local agriculture offices, which will also validate the identities of vendors to ensure that only legitimate producers can sell at the centers.
Construction of the facilities is now underway and is targeted for completion within 100 days.
In Carcar City, the center will be built near the public market in Barangay Poblacion III, while the Danao City site in Barangay Maslog is expected to help decongest the city proper.
The Cebu Provincial Government will fund the project, while the host local government units will provide the land for the facilities.
