The Philippine Carabao Center in Central Visayas (PCC 7) is seeking to forge a partnership with the Cebu Provincial Government to strengthen carabao-based dairy production and processing in the province, in line with efforts to improve food security and agricultural sustainability.

The initiative is expected to help expand Cebu’s dairy zone, to be supported later by a comprehensive Provincial Dairy Development Program, as the Capitol continues to push for increased local dairy production with support from the government.

Dr. Maria Dinah Loculan, center director of the Bohol-based PCC 7, said the agency, which is attached to the Department of Agriculture, has set aside 50 carabao heads for distribution to at least two farmers’ groups in Cebu.

Gov. Pamela Baricuatro welcomed the initiative, saying that agriculture and food sustainability programs remain among her administration’s top priorities alongside healthcare development.

“We never took care of agriculture in the past, especially the Province of Cebu,” Gov. Baricuatro said. “Karon nga naa tay krisis, kulang ta’s pagkaon, we are not self-sufficient,” she said.

Part of the program involves not only milk production but also milk processing and marketing, with the products intended to be sold at food centers that will be established by the Capitol.

The beneficiaries will be chosen from a list of farmers groups that have to be vetted. Among the products from carabao milk include fresh milk, kesong puti (white cheese), pastillas de leche, yogurt, ice cream and frozen delights, among many others. /𝑪𝑨𝑷𝑰𝑻𝑶𝑳 𝑷𝑰𝑶, 𝑷𝒉𝒐𝒕𝒐𝒔 𝒃𝒚 𝒀𝑱𝑩, 𝑭𝑬
