The Cebu Provincial Government has begun preparations for a large-scale rollout of electric buses aimed at addressing the region’s energy challenges and improving public transportation across the province and its island communities.

Gov. Pam Baricuatro, along with Provincial Administrator Atty. Ace Durano, Executive Assistant V assigned to Provincial Planning and Development Elizar Sabinay Jr., and Provincial School Board focal person Christopher Baricuatro, met with executives of Global Electric Transport (GET) Philippines to discuss the initiative.
The GET delegation was led by President Freddie Tinga and Head of Operations Frankie Endriga.
Talks focused on aligning efforts to tackle the energy crisis while transforming transportation and mobility systems in Cebu. Officials emphasized the need for strong participation from transport cooperatives operating across the province, as their involvement will be key to the program’s success.

Discussions also covered the development of a financing and business model designed to be feasible and cooperative-friendly. The provincial government is targeting implementation of the electric bus rollout before September this year.
Planners are currently identifying priority routes based on daily commuter movement within and between cities and municipalities. The initiative is also expected to enhance connectivity to island destinations such as Camotes and Bantayan, with officials highlighting its potential to boost tourism in those areas.
As a next step, the Provincial Planning and Development Office will prepare technical studies and a letter of intent for submission to the Department of Transportation and the Department of Trade and Industry by the end of the week.
With support from national agencies and local transport cooperatives, Cebu aims to secure a significant number of electric vehicles for deployment across the province, marking a major shift toward sustainable public transport. 𝐂𝐀𝐏𝐈𝐓𝐎𝐋 𝐏𝐈𝐎, 𝐏𝐡𝐨𝐭𝐨𝐬 𝐛𝐲 𝐅𝐄
