Capitol health officials conducted an inspection at the Cebu Provincial Hospital (CPH) in Carcar City on Friday to assess ongoing upgrades aimed at bolstering trauma response and clinical readiness, as well as expanding access to specialist care for residents of the southern towns.

Capitol Piso Health Consultant Dr. Nikki Catalan led the inspection team on a walkthrough of the facility, which serves as a key referral hub for municipalities in the southern corridor stretching from Sibonga to Dumanjug.
The ongoing upgrades of the 16 Capitol-run hospitals in the province are part of the reforms of Gov. Pamela Baricuatro to provide quality services to Cebuanos.

“Every step forward, whether in trauma systems, specialist access, diagnostics or infrastructure, moves us closer to a more responsive and resilient provincial health system,” Dr. Catalan said.
Trauma surgeons Dr. Jan Yap and Dr. Oliver Belarma joined the assessment of the hospital’s trauma management system.

With the emergency room now supported by SugBUCAS in partnership with Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center, hospital officials said they are fast-tracking standardized trauma protocols to ensure timely and coordinated life-saving interventions.
As part of the service expansion, CPH-Carcar has added two new specialists to its medical roster.

Ophthalmologist Dr. Mark Magallon will hold clinics every Thursday and Friday, while ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialist Dr. Manuel Montejo will see patients on Fridays and Saturdays.
Dr. Catalan added that the expanded services and access at provincial hospitals are expected to shorten travel time for patients, enable earlier diagnosis and ensure continuity of care.
Infrastructure upgrades are also underway. Plans include the departmentalization of the emergency room to separate internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and surgery cases, a move seen to improve patient flow and operational efficiency.
A dedicated mammogram room is also in the pipeline as part of efforts to strengthen early breast cancer detection.
The inspection team also reviewed improvements to the outpatient department’s roofing, with further enhancements planned to create a safer and more patient-friendly environment.
