Cebu Governor Pamela Baricuatro on Tuesday emphasized the need to keep barangay health workers (BHWs) focused on healthcare delivery, warning against their use for political purposes as the province continues to strengthen grassroots health services.
For the governor, BHWs in Cebu should not be used to advance political interests, pointing out their critical role in delivering basic health services at the community level.
“I believe that BHWs, naa na sa inyong pangalan, dapat gyud you should be involved in health and not in politics,” the governor said during the BHW Congress organized by the Department of Health Region (DOH) 7 at a hotel in Cebu City on April 14.
The two-day “Kampeon ng Kalusugan Health Promotion Congress” gathered frontline health workers from across Cebu for capacity-building sessions covering various topics, including BHW benefits and incentives under existing laws, their roles in the PuroKalusugan program, and the eight priority health outcomes. These include efforts to combat communicable and non-communicable diseases, promote road safety, improve water, sanitation and hygiene, boost immunization, and strengthen maternal health services.
“You inspire me when I see inyohang mga struggles, inyohang kalisod sa trabaho, padayon ra gihapon mo bisan og usahay walay support sa LGU,” the governor said. “Please, keep up the good job.”
Gov. Baricuatro also donated P100,000 from her personal funds for talent contests and raffle activities during the program.
DOH-7 Director Joshua Brillantes reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to strengthening the country’s healthcare system through its frontline workers, emphasizing that, “Walay UHC (University Health Care) kung walay BHW.”
