Cebu Gov. Pamela Baricuatro rolled out the red carpet for Greece on Wednesday evening, declaring that the island province will always be a second home to its friends from the Mediterranean nation as the Philippines and Athens marked 76 years of diplomatic relations and the National Day of Greece.

Welcoming Greek Ambassador Ioannis Pediotis, his wife Aliki Pappa, and European Union Ambassador Massimo Santoro at the Cebu Provincial Capitol, Gov. Baricuatro described the occasion as more than a commemoration of history.

“Tonight is a celebration of history. But more than that, it is a celebration of friendship,” the governor said in her message. “A friendship built on shared values, mutual respect, and a common desire to uplift our people and strengthen our nations.”

Gov. Baricuatro, joined by Honorary Consul General Michael Acebedo Lopez and Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival, expressed Cebu’s pride in being part of a partnership that continues to deepen.

“We believe that meaningful connections—between nations, between cultures, and between people—create opportunities not only for economic growth, but for deeper understanding and lasting peace,” she said.

The governor extended warm greetings to the Greek people, recognizing their “rich heritage” and “enduring contributions to culture and democracy.”

She ended her remarks with a personal pledge to the Greek envoy: “To our friends from Greece, please know that you will always have a home here.”

The gathering highlighted Cebu’s growing role as a hub for international diplomacy, bringing together members of the diplomatic corps and local officials in a celebration of cross-cultural friendship.
