Cebu Gov. Pamela Baricuatro has directed all department heads to strictly enforce waste segregation within their respective offices at the Provincial Capitol as an initial step in strengthening the province’s solid waste management efforts.

Separate bins for wet and dry waste will be installed across offices to ensure proper segregation.

“Let’s walk the talk. Lisod if magpa-implement ta’s municipalities unya di ta muhimo. So we should start here,” Gov. Baricuatro said during the department heads’ meeting at the Capitol on Monday, March 23.

Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) Head Rodel Bontuyan proposed the use of a provincial lot in Sudlon, Lahug, Cebu City for the establishment of compost pits to process biodegradable or wet waste.

For non-biodegradable or dry waste, the governor has also ordered the procurement of a P10-million waste-to-fuel machine as part of the province’s long-term waste management strategy.

The directive comes as Gov. Baricuatro emphasized that despite an existing ordinance for over two decades, no waste-to-energy project has been fully implemented in the province.

Following its rollout at the Capitol, the waste segregation initiative will also be expanded to key public areas, including the Cebu North and South Bus Terminals and the Larsian food park. | 𝑪𝑨𝑷𝑰𝑻𝑶𝑳 𝑷𝑰𝑶, file photos
