The Cebu Provincial Government, led by Gov. Pamela Baricuatro, officially launched the “Clean Cebu Campaign” on Thursday, March 19, during the Understanding Choices Series Forum, reinforcing its commitment to improve waste management across the province.

The campaign serves as a unified initiative among all municipalities and component cities of Cebu, including the tri-cities, aimed at strengthening sanitation and public health programs.

Gov. Baricuatro emphasized the urgency of addressing the province’s waste challenges, highlighting their impact on communities, public health, and disaster preparedness.

“Because what we are facing is not a small problem. The waste dilemma we see today affects our communities, our health, and even our safety—especially during disasters. If we do not act now, the consequences will only grow heavier for our people,” the governor said.

“This campaign will only succeed if each one of us decides to be part of it. I challenge you—not just to agree or support—but to commit,” she added, calling for collective accountability among stakeholders.

A Pledge of Commitment signing highlighted the event, participated in by mayors from various local government units, representatives from private companies, civil society groups, and non-government organizations.

Also present were the mayors of Cebu’s highly urbanized cities—Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival, Mandaue City Mayor Jonkie Ouano, and Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Cindi King-Chan, signifying unified support for the province-wide initiative.

Meanwhile, Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region 7 Executive Director Laudemir Salac commended the province for advancing a coordinated approach among its cities and municipalities, noting that environmental issues transcend political boundaries.

Salac also assured stronger monitoring and enforcement of sanitary landfills in Cebu through the creation of a multipartite monitoring team composed of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau, LGUs, and other concerned agencies to ensure transparency, accountability, and technical oversight.

He further emphasized the need to strengthen community-based programs at the grassroots level, including strict compliance with waste segregation and the promotion of waste diversion strategies to reduce dependence on landfills.I CAPITOL PIO/ PHOTOS BY FE AND YS
