The province’s fight against breast cancer received a much-needed shot in the arm as brand-new mammogram machines have arrived and will soon be operational at four Capitol-run provincial hospitals.

The machines will be installed at the provincial hospital in Balamban town and in the cities of Danao, Carcar and Bogo, according to Capitol Piso Health Consultant Dr. Nikki Catalan.

Once fully operational, the facilities will offer mammography services to women who previously had to travel to Cebu City or major medical centers for screening.

“A mammogram is one of the most powerful tools we have for the early detection of breast cancer,” Catalan said. “It can detect abnormalities in breast tissue even before a lump is felt, giving women a much better chance at early treatment and survival.”

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among Filipino women, with an estimated 33,000 cases diagnosed in the country every year. Statistics show that roughly one in every 13 Filipino women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime.

Catalan said the provincial government under Gov. Pamela Baricuatro is addressing gaps in cancer care by bringing diagnostic services closer to communities.

“Soon, more Cebuana women will be able to get screened closer to home, without long travel or delays,” she added.

Health advocates have long emphasized that early screening saves lives. For countless women across northern and southern Cebu, the installation of these machines represents the Capitol’s tangible efforts to protect women’s health, Catalan said.

The provincial government assured the public that more healthcare upgrades are underway as part of its program to make medical services more accessible to all Cebuanos.
