When a heart attack strikes, every second is a fight for survival.

Recognizing this, the Cebu Provincial Government is moving to strengthen emergency cardiac care in its hospitals by enabling earlier treatment for heart attack patients, particularly those from far-flung areas of the province.

Dr. Nikki Catalan, Capitol piso health consultant to Gov. Pamela Baricuatro, met with Dr. Wilfredo Ypil Jr. and his team from the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) Regional Heart Center for the second time to continue preparations for an Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) Network across Cebu Province.

The meeting was held on Friday, March 13, at the Cebu Provincial Hospital (CPH) in Danao City.

The network is designed to drastically reduce the time it takes for patients, especially those in far-flung towns, to receive life-saving intervention.

“This is especially important for patients coming from farther areas, where reaching a cardiac center within the 90-minute window can be challenging,” Dr. Catalan said.

At the heart of the strategy is a pilot program at CPH-Danao that will allow doctors to administer early thrombolysis, a treatment that dissolves artery-blocking blood clots, on the spot.

According to Dr. Catalan, this critical intervention “allows life-saving treatment to begin even before referral to apex hospitals for Percutaneous Coronary Intervention.”

By receiving treatment immediately, she explained, patients can “buy precious time and improve survival” while they are being transferred for definitive cardiac procedures to advanced facilities.

“We are grateful to Dr. Ypil and the VSMMC Regional Heart Center team for their continued support in strengthening cardiac care in our provincial hospitals, because when it comes to heart attacks, every minute truly matters,” Dr. Catalan said.

The provincial government has thrown its weight behind the initiative, demonstrating its steadfast commitment to the reforms implemented under the administration of Gov. Baricuatro.
