A total of P7.3 million in financial assistance was distributed by the provincial government to barangays across at least four districts in Cebu to support various community programs and priority projects.

The assistance is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen grassroots governance by providing local officials with direct resources for community-level initiatives.

Cebu Gov. Pamela Baricuatro personally handed over the checks to barangay captains on March 9 at the Capitol Social Hall.

The financial aid varied depending on the nature of the project, ranging from P30,000 for socio-cultural activities to as much as P200,000 for infrastructure projects such as road concreting and rehabilitation of barangay facilities, among others.

Of the total amount, P3.3 million was allocated for barangays in Cebu’s first district. Of this, P2 million was received by the Office of the Vice Mayor of Sibonga, Mariano Laude, for the initiatives of the municipal council.

Barangays in the third district received P550,000, while those in the seventh district were allocated P800,000. The lone district of Mandaue City, joined by Board Member Malcolm Sanchez, received P2.7 million.

Gov. Baricuatro said the national government is increasingly adopting a policy of downloading funds directly to barangays to minimize corruption and streamline the delivery of public services.

She noted that by giving barangay officials more direct control over resources, they are better positioned to implement programs and address community needs at the grassroots level. | CAPITOL PIO
