At least 80 additional personnel will be deployed to the Capitol-run provincial and district hospitals for nine months, with the Department of Labor and Employment Central Visayas (DOLE 7) covering all costs through its internship program.

The deployment, which places no financial burden on the provincial treasury, is expected to help ease the workload of both medical and non-medical staff while providing job opportunities and practical work experience for young graduates in the region.

Atty. Roy Buenafe, DOLE 7 regional director, said the arrangement is part of the agency’s Government Internship Program (GIP), which provides opportunities for youth from poor and indigent backgrounds to serve the general public by participating in government projects and programs at the national and local levels.

Among the program’s objectives is to give young workers the opportunity to demonstrate their talents and skills in public service, with the long-term goal of attracting capable individuals to pursue careers in government, particularly in labor- and employment-related fields.

“Dako ni siyag ikatabang sa atong mga ospital nga matagaan og gamay nga lugak ang atong mga doctors, nurses, and even non-medical personnel nga duna tay mga interns nga moabag nila sa ilang trabaho,” Atty. Buenafe said.

Dr. Nikki Catalan, Capitol piso health consultant, welcomed the additional manpower, highlighting that the interns will be especially helpful in administrative and digitalization efforts within the province’s hospital system.

“This will significantly augment our manpower, especially in non-clinical areas. We envision that they can help in clerical work, expediting our PhilHealth claims, and other administrative duties. Young interns are naturally adept in IT; this is a plus, especially as we are moving toward digitalization,” Dr. Catalan said.

She added that she will ask the Chiefs of Hospitals to maximize the skills training for the participants so they can gain meaningful takeaways when the program ends.

Atty. Buenafe visited the Capitol on March 6 to attend the first quarter meeting of the League of Public Employment Service Office Managers Cebu Chapter, led by its president Kim Francisco of the Public Employment Service Office (PESO) in Lapu-Lapu City.

He clarified that the “interns” engaged in the program include high school, college, and technical-vocational graduates, as the initiative serves as an employment bridging program for individuals seeking work experience.

Participants will be paid by DOLE the prevailing regional minimum wage, which currently stands at P540 per day. They will be assigned to non-clinical tasks such as document encoding, office support, and kitchen assistance, as well as other duties that do not require medical knowledge.

“Atong mga applicants nga bag-ong graduates, pangayoan dayon og experience. Kana man gud nga gap maoy gitagaan og pagtagad karon. Our program will expose them to the real world of work, labi na nga nagkinahanglan ang Probinsya sa Sugbo og mga personnel ngadto sa atong mga hospitals,” he said.

The program also seeks to accelerate the implementation and monitoring of DOLE initiatives related to employment facilitation and social protection, contributing to the broader goal of inclusive growth through increased employment generation and meaningful poverty reduction. | CAPITOL PIO
