A new interventional pain clinic offering advanced treatment for chronic and cancer-related pain has opened at the Cebu Provincial Hospital (CPH)–Balamban, the first facility of its kind in Cebu and the Visayas.

The clinic, according to Capitol Piso Health Consultant Dr. Nikki Catalan, provides specialized interventional pain management services, including minimally invasive procedures designed to treat patients suffering from long-term and debilitating pain conditions.
The program was made possible through the initiative of Dr. Kirby Ardiente, with support from Dr. Olivia Dandan, CPH Balamban Chief of Hospital, said Capitol Piso Health Consultant Dr. Nikki Catalan.

Among the procedures now available at the facility is Radiofrequency (RF) Ablation, a technique that targets nerves responsible for transmitting pain signals. By disrupting those signals, the procedure can significantly reduce pain and improve patients’ mobility and quality of life.
Dr. Catalan said the clinic is intended to expand treatment options for patients experiencing chronic pain and cancer-related pain, conditions that can severely affect daily functioning and overall well-being.

The initiative also carries a deeply personal story for the hospital leadership.
When Ardiente returned from specialized training in pain management, his first patient at CPH Balamban was Dandan’s mother, who was then in the final stage of her life. At the time, the hospital faced limited resources and shortages of some medicines.
Despite those challenges, the medical team was able to help manage her pain and provide comfort during her final days.
Hospital officials said that experience helped inspire the establishment of the dedicated interventional pain clinic.
“What once began with one patient is now a dedicated Interventional Pain Clinic, equipped to help many more Cebuanos facing chronic and cancer-related pain. Small beginnings. Meaningful impact,” Dr. Catalan said.
The opening of the clinic represents a milestone in expanding specialized healthcare services in Cebu, particularly for patients who previously had limited access to advanced pain management procedures.
Dr. Catalan said the facility aims to serve more Cebuanos suffering from chronic and cancer-related pain while continuing to strengthen healthcare services in the province. /𝑪𝑨𝑷𝑰𝑻𝑶𝑳 𝑷𝑰𝑶, 𝑺𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒄𝒆: 𝑫𝒓. 𝑬𝒍𝒊𝒔𝒔𝒆 𝑵𝒊𝒄𝒐𝒍𝒆 𝑪𝒂𝒕𝒂𝒍𝒂𝒏 𝑭𝑩 𝒂𝒄𝒄𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒕
