In a development expected to enhance regional connectivity and economic opportunities, the Chinese Consulate General in Cebu confirmed that direct flights between Cebu and Quanzhou, Fujian Province, China will officially resume on March 29.

This was initially announced by Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines Jing Quan, who was in Cebu last month and met with Gov. Pam Baricuatro.

Xiamen Airlines will operate the route twice weekly, restoring a vital air link that supports tourism, trade, and people-to-people exchanges between the two regions. The Consulate emphasized its continued commitment to promoting cooperation and strengthening bilateral relations.

Earlier this month, Governor Pam led a delegation from Cebu Provincial Government to Fujian Province and joined high-level engagements aimed at expanding partnerships in healthcare, investment, and economic development.

The visit included a strategic stop in Quanzhou, one of China’s most historically significant coastal cities known for global trade and cultural diversity.

During her meeting with Fujian Governor Zhao Long, Governor Pam underscored the importance of restoring direct air connectivity between Cebu and the province, citing its critical role in accelerating business exchanges, tourism growth, and cultural collaboration. Among her key requests was the reopening of direct flights to Cebu — a move now seen as a tangible outcome reinforcing the strengthened relationship between the sister provinces.

Provincial officials welcomed the announcement, noting that improved accessibility is expected to encourage business missions, educational partnerships, and tourism flows, while also making travel more convenient for overseas Chinese communities with roots in Fujian.

The restored route supports Governor Pam’s broader vision of positioning Cebu as a globally competitive and investor-friendly province. By expanding international gateways, the administration aims to attract more strategic partnerships that drive inclusive economic growth for Cebuanos.

With flights set to resume, Governor Pam sees the development not only as a transportation milestone but also as a symbol of deepening trust and cooperation that builds on the momentum generated during the Governor’s recent visit and opens new pathways for Cebu’s continued engagement in the Asia-Pacific region. | CAPITOL PIO
