The Cebu Provincial Government plans to start giving out annual cash assistance to the senior citizens in the province next year.
Provincial Board Member Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba announced this during the Senior Citizen’s Day celebration last October 21 at the Capitol Social Hall.
Alcoseba said the planned cash assistance may not be reflected yet in the province’s annual budget for 2015, which is yet to be approved by the board.
“But we can make a supplemental budget for that. We are asking the mayors to give us the list of all senior citizens in their towns or component cities,” he said.
Atty. Lorenzo Moscoso, president, Provincial Federation of Senior Citizens Association of Philippines-Cebu Province, said they are hoping that the plan will be materialized.
He said it’s the common question that their members ask because the Cebu City Government has been giving financial aid to the senior citizens.
He added that it is one way of showing that the Capitol is giving importance on the improvement of the lives of senior citizens in the province.
Moscoso, who hails from Minglanilla town, was tasked to read the rationale of the Senior Citizen’s Day celebration. October is marked by the National Government as Senior Citizen’s Month and this was the first time that the Capitol observed the Senior Citizen’s Day.
The Cebu Provincial Senior Citizen’s Council was just created this year and has yet to convene for the first time.
The purpose of the celebration is the recognition of the senior citizens’ role in nation building. But for Moscoso, it means that they really are forgotten ones. He said they do not need a legislation to institutionalize their role in nation building.
“If the collegial bodies of our government would just consult our wisdom for the crafting of programs and legislative measures, then we do not need laws anymore for us to be recognized,” he said.
Currently, the Provincial Government allocates 90 sacks of rice per local government unit in Cebu for elderly persons.
Rosalinda Jao, assistant officer-in-charge, Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office, said they will also distribute canned goods and noodles as soon as their supplies arrive.
