With more and more Filipinos discovering scuba diving as a viable pastime, being in close proximity to world class diving sites, underwater photography is becoming equally popular.
Recognizing the growing community of diver-photographers, Splash Underwater Imaging, Inc., a specialty shop that sells underwater photography equipment, has established the country’s largest underwater photo contest. It aims to create a competition among Filipinos and foreigners alike in sharing to the world the beauty of the marine world in the Philippines.
Dubbed as SNUPS or the “Splash-NUDI Underwater Photo Shootout” the competition was first held in 2011 in two (2) popular dive destinations in the country: Batangas in Luzon and Cebu in the Visayas. The competition has gained grounds, entries for the different categories continue to grow in numbers annually.
These entries are judged by industry luminaries including Michael Aw of Ocean Geographic Magazine, Women Divers Hall of Famer Lynn Funkhouser, Steve de Neef of Dive Photo Guide and BBC, among others.
For this year, SNUPS will further enhance environmental awareness and tourism as it partners with international magazine Ocean Geographic, the Philippine Commission on Sports Scuba Diving and the Cebu Provincial Government.
The first leg of the competition, dubbed as Cebu leg will be on May 2-5, 2014, and the next leg will be in Batangas on May 9-12, 2014.
As in the previous years, the competition is primarily an amateur competition where participants will be able to complete in three classes, namely, Beginner, Compact and Open Class, and awards over USD $20,000.00 worth of prizes. For more information of SNUPs competition, you can visit www.snups.ph
