Saint Theresa’s College prevented a sweep of the Banilad FC after winning the title in the girls under-15 division of the 1st Cebu Province Futsal Tournament last weekend in the City of Naga.
Riding the crest of their three straight wins going into the final round, the STC lady booters blanked Banilad FC, 2-0 to wrest away the crown.
The older team of Banilad FC, however, made sure they won’t go home empty-handed by drubbing Canduman FC, 2-0 in the final match of the girls under-18 category.
In the mixed 11 division final showdown, Don Bosco routed Canduman, 4-0 while Mandaue FC beat Alcoy, 2-0 to bag the boys 15-U title.
The two-day competition was organized by the Cebu Provincial Sports Commission in line with the 447th founding anniversary of the Province of Cebu.
Philippine Sports Commission Commissioner Ramon Fernandez and City of Naga Mayor Vanessa Chiong graced the opening ceremony along with the province’s sports officials led by lawyer Ramil Abing.
Provincial Board member Miguel Magpale, who is the chairman of the PB’s committee on youth and sports development, was also present in the event.
In his message read by Magpale, Gov. Hilario P. Davide III advised the players to set their goals and remain focus coupled with positivism as small things could oftentimes stave off an athlete’s rise to greater heights.
“It isn’t the mountains ahead to climb that wear you out; it’s the pebble in your shoe,” said Davide lifting a quote from legendary boxer Muhammad Ali.
Fernandez, a successful PBA player, agreed with Davide but added thatathletes must be willing to make sacrifices if they wanted to achieve their dreams. (Kelvin Canizares/photo by Donald Moga)
