Special day for senior citizens held

Around 200 senior citizens joined in the celebration of Senior Citizens Day that the Cebu Provincial Government organized in their honor last Oct. 23 at the Capitol Social Hall.

With the theme, Igalang ang mga nakatatanda at ang kanilang mga karapatan,” the event was an opportunity for the government leaders to recognize the dedication and hard work of the senior citizens in the past years.

Provincial Social Welfare Development Office (PSWDO), through its health and social services, took the initiative to make the special day happen.

PSWDO Officer-in-Charge Rocelyn Zosa said that aside from this event, the province is also doing “Halad Alang Kang Lolo ug Lola,” a program that features distribution of packs of rice and canned goods to the senior citizens.”

In her speech, she asked the senior citizens if they are willing to have a livelihood project but majority of them didn’t agree.

The initial idea was not to put senior citizens in homes for aged but to open for them an opportunity to earn a living.

“We have a proposed project for senior citizens to be storytellers during the Suroy-Suroy Sugbo since they are more knowledgeable about the history of their place, including the stories behind old churches in the province,” Zosa said.

PSWDO is also finding ways for the senior citizens to create employment based on their abilities, talents and skills.

Meanwhile, Provincial Board Member Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba, chairperson of the committees on public services and on senior citizens, said that they will start giving out annual cash assistance to the senior citizens in the province next year.

Paningkamotan namo nga makahatag na kami sunod tuig ug cash assistance isip pahalipay kaninyo (We will try our best so we can give cash assistance to the senior citizens next year),” Alcoseba said.

Alcoseba added that the planned cash assistance will also be supported by the local government units (LGUs). Half of the total amount will be from the Cebu Provincial Government and the other half will be from the LGUs.

Marina Vilchez, 63–year-old resident of Liloan, said that they already received cash assistance from their municipality.

Nakadawat na sa amo lungsod ug tag P500 quarterly ug tag 5 ka kilo nga bugas,” she said.

She is happy to know that the Cebu Provincial Government and their municipality are always supporting the needs of the senior citizens.

Hinaut unta nga magpadayon ang pagtigum-tigum sa mga senior citizens ug mahimo kini nga outlet nga makalaag ari sa syudad (I hope this gathering of senior citizens will continue and will pave the way for us to visit the urban areas),” she added.
