RP Portugal rekindles ties

His Excellency Joaquim Alberto de Sousa Moreira De Lemos, Ambassador of Portugal to the Philippines described the diplomatic relations of Philippines and Portugal as “restarting”.

In his visit to the Cebu Provincial Capitol for a courtesy call with Governor Hilario P. Davide III, HE De Lemos stressed that the Philippines and Portugal have always been in good diplomatic ties. Aside from consular issues, his mandate will “restart” to focus more on the area of economics. HE De Lemos said that Portugal hopes to increase business proposals in the Philippines and in Cebu particularly.

In his talk with Governor Davide, HE De Lemos divulged that Portugal wants to expand and maximize its business clout in the Philippines. Competitive sectors have already been identified to bear business potentials which include: textile, shoes, software and telecommunications.

Cebu Governor Hilario P. Davide III thanked Ambassador De Lemos for his visit in Cebu and grateful to Portugal for the country’s interest in doing more business in Cebu.

His Excellency De Lemos also talked history with Governor Davide and expressed his intention to see the real cross that Magellan, a Portuguese, planted in Cebu almost 500 years ago.

His Excellency Joaquim Alberto de Sousa Moreira De Lemos, presented his credentials to the President of the Philippines last January 8, 2014. In his visit to the Cebu Provincial Capitol, his wife Paula De Lemos and Consul Samuel Chioson, the Honorary Consul of Portugal in Cebu, accompanied him.
