On June 15, the ASEAN Dengue Day will be observed. As a member state of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the Philippines will also participate by coming up with activities.
Currently, the central office of the Department of Health is communicating with the regional health unit for Central Visayas, based in Cebum to finalize program celebration.
Three years ago, Davao City hosted ASEAN Dengue Day in 2013 with the theme, Barangay Kontra Dengue.
The highlight of this year’s ASEAN Dengue Day is dengue vaccine, which will now be commercially available in the country.
Top health officials are to grace the celebration to mark the nationwide implementation of dengue vaccination.
The vaccine was used on fourth graders in Metro Manila public schools and in southern and central Luzon as pilot areas.
According to a CNN report, 200,415 dengue cases were reported in 2015 with 598 deaths.
The Philippines is not the only country fighting dengue. The 10 member states under the ASEAN are engaged in a united front against the dreaded disease. The initiative started in 2010 during the 10th ASEAN Health Ministers Meeting.
