PCWC launches literary, musical contests for children

The Province of Cebu through the Provincial Council for the Welfare of Children (PCWC) launched three competitions for elementary and secondary schoolchildren. This is in cooperation with the Department of Education – Cebu Province and the different city divisions around the province.

Gov. Hilario P. Davide III sits as the chairperson of the PCWC. In a meeting presided by Vice Governor and PCWC Co-Chairperson Agnes Magpale last Thursday, Aug. 28, at the Vice Governor’s conference room, the body decided to launch competitions in oration and balitaw for secondary students and declamation for elementary pupils. This is for the Children’s Month celebration in October.

Normally, the Halad sa Kabataan is the main event of the celebration. However, the event was scrapped for this year since the 2013 grand finals had just been held recently as part of the province’s founding anniversary celebration after it was displaced by the two big calamities last year.

The oration and declamation pieces, which will be in English, will center on the agreed theme, which is “Katungod Ko, Kaakuhan Ko” (My Rights, My Responsibility).

The meeting was attended by Music, Arts and Physical Education (Mape) teachers from the provincial division office and municipal and city division offices. Represented were the municipalities of Cordova, Argao, Madridejos, Dalaguete, Santa Fe, Tuburan and Borbon and the cities of Danao, Naga, Toledo and Talisay.

The teachers agreed to disseminate information on the contests in their respective localities. They will also perform two Cebuano folk dances: Miligoy de Cebu and Jota Cambiojana, during the finals.

The grand finals is tentatively scheduled on the third week of October at the Capitol grounds. Cash prizes and medals are at stake for the winners.
