With a P15.95 million budget for this year, the Cebu Provincial Government continues to reach out and give gifts to senior citizens of the province through Halad Kang Lolo ug Lola.
Over 6,000 senior citizens from Talisay City, south of Cebu received three kilos of rice each as a simple “gasa” (gift) from the Provincial Capitol through the Office of the Vice Governor.
Governor Hilario P. Davide III and Vice Governor Agnes A. Magpale led the distribution last September 27 as they personally handed the rice packs to the beneficiaries.
Provincial Board members Yolanda “Yoly” Daan and Raul Bacaltos were also present together with the respective barangay officials who helped supervise the distribution.
Among those who received three kilos of rice was Angelina Romay, 66, an ambulant vendor from Barangay San Isidro.
Expressing her gratitude to the Capitol, she said that the three kilos of rice will make a difference for her and his son suffering from Tuberculosis.
Romay explained that she can only afford to buy one kilo or half a kilo every day. The three kilos of rice she receive will save her from buying rice for three days.
“Dako na kaayo ni og tabang para sa amoa,” she said.
Tancila Rosagencia, 64, and Asteria Bellones, 70, both neighbors from Barangay Bulacao shared that they appreciate the efforts of the Governor and the Vice Governor to personally give out the rice packs and interact with the senior citizens.
Beneficiaries were from the seven barangays in Talisay City, namely Bulacao, Candulawan, Dumlog, San Isidro, Tabunok, Lagtang and Lawaan III.
Magpale, in a short speech, explained that the program “Halad Alang Kang Lolo ug Lola” encompasses all senior citizens of the barangays irrespective of their social class or economic status.
“Basta senior citizen ka, apil ka sa makadawat og gasa. Bisag naa kay anak naa sa abroad, apil gihapon ka. Para ni sa tanan senior citizens,” she said. (Katrina Marie Diaz)
