Governor Hilario P. Davide III plans to build a trading center or a “basgsakan center” for farm products coming from the different towns and component cities in the Province of Cebu.
“The idea is on the table,” Davide said in an interview at the Provincial Capitol last Friday, August 2.
The Governor said that they are considering a portion of the South Road Properties as a possible location for the facility, but the province may also use their property in Sudlon, Lahug, Cebu City.
Governor Davide recently appointed his uncle 2012 Ramon Magsaysay Awardee Dr. Romulo Davide as consultant of the Provincial Agriculturist Office effective July 1. The Governor requested Dr. Davide to assist him in the expansion of Farmer Scientist Training Program (FSTP), wherein a farmer scientist will teach the farmers how to produce high yielding crops and experiment new technologies in crop production.
In a separate interview, Dr. Davide confirmed his appointment but he said it was on the condition that he will only receive P1 a year. He reasoned out that his only intention is to help the farmers in the province. He said that local farmers should not be impoverished. He added that FSTP holds the formula that will force the farmers to become more productive and self-sustaining. Through hard work, perseverance, patience, and prayers plus a farmer-scientist’s guidance and a trading center/market, the farmers can be assured of a higher income, he added. “Once the farmers learned the technical and scientific skills, they will become scientist- farmers, who can decide which crops are suitable in a specific area and season of the year,” he said.
A professor emeritus of University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB), he said the local farmers trained under the FSTP may obtain a degree and receive a diploma from UPLB and Cebu Technological University.
Dr. Davide has started FSTP in Argao in 1994. Due to the high production of farm products, Argao rose from being a fifth class municipality to first class municipality after a decade. (Xerxes Alkuino)
