Football brawl dialogue at the Capitol

IMG_9483The Cebu provincial government will provide an avenue for the dialogue between the parties involved in the recent football brawl. Governor Hilario P. Davide III and Vice Governor Agnes Magpale will meet the two teams on Monday, March 31 at the Capitol.

Davide stressed they will not act as mediators but will just provide a venue for the forum. The agenda and the guidelines for the meeting will also be handled by the provincial government.

Davide will invite Alcoy Mayor Nick delos Santos, the referees, the coaches, and the presidents of the two football clubs. The governor will also request the children’s parents to attend the dialogue.

Ateneo de Cebu FC representatives together with JM Kwan, the football player engaged in the brawl, went to the offices of Vice Governor Magpale and Governor Davide to air their sentiments. The Ateneo team expressed to the Governor their intention to meet with the Alcoy FC for a formal dialogue.

The Alcoy team first visited the office of Vice Governor Magpale to seek assistance in pursuing their case. Magpale explained to the Ateneo team that there was no prejudice in the Alcoy team’s visit. As mandated by law, the province created a Technical Working Group (TWG) to investigate the issue. The TWG only establishes the minority of the complainant and whether there was abuse.

Magpale also stressed that as mandated by law the Provincial Government is ready to provide medical and legal assistance to the Alcoy team. Magpale however stressed that their willingness to extend assistance is not an indication that the TWG has already dispensed judgment.

Davide, a self professed football player in his teenage years, shared that football is a very physical sport and brawl/s between athletes is expected. He welcomed the proposed dialogue between Alcoy FC and Ateneo team.

The football match between Alcoy and Ateneo de Cebu is part of the 16th Aboitiz Football Cup. Diane Higida
