Pundok sa Kabataang Mananayaw of Danao City and Looc Norte National High School of Asturias were declared grand winners of the Sinulog sa Kabataan sa Lalawigan 2016 heldon Jan. 9 at the Cebu City Sports Center.
Pundok sa Kabataang Mananayaw sa Danao City bested two other contingents in the elementary level with their performances that featured Filipino superheroes and local folklore.
The group showcased the traditional ritual showdown of Sinulog wherein good and evil fight each other and end up defeating the evil with the help of Señor Sto. Niño.
Looc Norte National High School is a first time participant in the Sinulog sa Kabataan sa Lalawigan competition.
The group impressed the crowd with their performances such that the 51st International Eucharistic Congress (IEC) requested a repeat performance on Jan. 24-31.
Choreographer Walter Betito featured the students dressed as nuns and priests waving the flags of different nations as the delegations of the 51st IEC arrived in Cebu.
Looc Norte National High School defeated five other contingents from the province in the secondary level.
Pundok sa Kabataang Mananayaw of Danao City received P350,000 and Looc Norte National High School earned P300,000 for winning first place in the ritual showdown.
Other winners in the ritual showdown, under the elementary level, were Naga Central School of Naga City (2nd, P200, 000) and Tribu Ginatilan of the Municipality of Ginatilan (3rd, P200,000).
In the secondary level, the winners were Carcar City Division (2nd, P200,000), Tuburan Performing Arts (3rd, P150,000), Mandaue City Youth Cultural Dance Troupe (4th, P125,000),and Tribu Alegrianhon of Alegria (5th, P100,000).
Naga Central School bagged the first place (P50,000) for the street dancing in the elementary category. Tribu Ginatilan ranked second (P30,000) while Pundok sa Kabataang Mananayaw of Danao City placed third (P20,000).
In the secondary level, Tuburan Peforming Arts won first place (P50,000), Looc Norte National High School placed second (P30,000) and Mandaue City Youth Cultural Dance Troupe placed third (P20,000).
For the best in costume, Naga Central School in elementary level and Carcar City Division in the secondary level both won and received P50, 000 each.
Pundok sa Kabataang Mananayaw of Danao City won the best in musicality in the elementary level and Carcar City Division in the secondary. Each winner received P50,000 each.
Meanwhile Vice Governor Agnes Magpale witnessed the grandiose event together with Tuburan Mayor Aljun Diamante.
Magpale thanked the Sinulog Foundation headed by Director Ricky Ballesteros for continuing the Sinulog sa Kabataan sa Lalawigan as part of the celebration of the annual fiesta in Cebu City.
“Mapasalamaton kaayo ta sa Sinulog Foundation pagpadayon niining tinuig nga kalihukan alang sa mga kabatan-onan sa probinsya sa Sugbo ug salamat usab sa Department of Education (DepEd)-Cebu Province sa kanunay nga pagsuporta niini (We are thankful to the Sinulog Foundation for continuing this event for the youth in the province and to DepEd Cebu Province for their continued support,” said by Magpale.
She added that the competition would really help the students to embrace the culture and tradition of the Cebuanos by dancing Sinulog steps to offer to Señor Sto. Niño.
