The Cebu Provincial Government distributed slippers to the inmates at the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC) last May 8.
Jone Segfred Sepe, officer-in-charge of the Provincial General Services Office (PGSO), said this was to make life at the jail convenient for the prisoners.
“Kinihanglan gyud ni kaayo kay naay uban dinhi walay dalaw kay layo kaayo ang probinsya. (This is very important as others do not have nearby relatives to supply their needs),” Sepe added.
Consultant on jail matters, Marco Toral, said there are 1,912 inmates at the facility. Each of them is given a pair of slippers distributed through the leader of their respective cells.
Aside from slippers, the Capitol also allotted funds for their other necessities like soaps, clothes, shoes, and blankets.
“Dako gyud ni ikatabang namo tungod dili man gud tanang panahon makalugar ang among pamilya pag-ari diri (This is a huge help because not many of us have relatives who can visit us regularly),” said Victor Diolan of San Fernando town.
Diolan, who celebrated his 37th birthday, was very happy that his birthday fell during the jail’s regular visiting day.
“Malipayon kaayo ko tungod akong birthday natumong nga ting-dalaw unya ania gyud akong pamilya (I am really happy because I was able to celebrate my birthday with my family around),” he said. This is his 10th year at the jail. He said he was convicted of two counts of murder. But instead of serving life sentence, his offense was downgraded and thus he will only serve 25 years of imprisonment.
