For the first time in many years, Cebu delegates dominated the skills competitions in the 26th Regional Farm Family Forum and Achievement Day.

The event was held last Aug 17-19 in Dumaguete City. It was sponsored by the Department of Agriculture (DA) 7.

The Cebuanos won first prize in five out of 13 categories. The winners in the 4H (Head, Heart, Hands, and Health) Club contests are Glen Cortes of Minglanilla (indigenous plaque making), Ricky Sellote of Minglanilla (duck meat cooking), Johanna Sacal of San Fernando (quiz bee), and Maria Concepcion Caseñal and Ma. Mae Caseñal of Toledo City (duet singing).

Maria Theresa Abella, provincial coordinator of the event, said the first placers earned the right to represent the region in the national competition. It will be held in Baguio City.

The main goal of the event is to give importance to small scale family farming. “The family that farms together stays together. There will be famine if there is no more family farming,” said Provincial Agriculturist Dr. Roldan Saragena.

He also stated that it allows the farmers and their children to obtain awareness on how important they are to the community.

The provincial level of the event, which is the Provincial Farm Family Achievement Day was stopped in the previous years.

With the assumption of Governor Hilario P. Davide III three years ago, the activity was revived. Abella said more than P300,000 was allocated for the activity itself every year.  The amount already includes hosting expenses and prizes.

Abella said, the event has become a magnet to the local government units. She said its number of participants increased annually. The Provincial Farm Family Achievement Day this year was held at the Cebu Business Hotel with 400 participants.

Abella further stated that the event started many years ago. In their recent memory they don’t remember the provincial delegates become over-all champions the regional level competition.
