The Cebu Province baseball team remained a powerhouse in the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (CVRAA) Meet. The team’s secondary division beat Cebu City Niños this year for the second time in three years. The 2015 CVRAA was held in the municipality of Balamban. The weeklong tournament concluded last March 2.

Overall, Cebu City won its 23rd championship in the CVRAA with 115 gold, 93 silver, and 63 bronze medals. Mandaue City finished second and the erstwhile second placer Cebu Province slid to third place. Mandaue won 57 gold, 36 silver, and 39 bronze medals while Cebu Province finished 33 gold,   44 silver, and 57 bronze medals.

The Cebu Province baseball team is composed of players from Liloan, Tuburan, Poro, and Carmen. Antonia Santillan of Carmen coached them.

According to Joselito Dacir, a baseball coach of Sogod, a rivalry persisted between the top two baseball teams for many years now. “They have been battling for supremacy for the sporting event for a long time. This is not only in the secondary division but also in the elementary division,” he added.

Dacir said the constant winner in the elementary though is the Cebu Province Division.

Cebu Province’ baseball team is the last brick wall standing for the division. This as volleyball juggernaut of the municipality of Catmon, a Palarong Pambansa four time gold medalist, lost to Mandaue City this year.

Asked what lies ahead for the kids, Dacir said volleyball is a better sport than baseball in terms getting scholarships for the players. The reason is “there is no money in baseball,” he said. In fact, he added, there is no big baseball league in the country unlike basketball and volleyball.
