_IGP1295The Filipino water buffalo, commonly known as carabao, is every farmer’s best friend. Carabaos provide the necessary labor farmers need to grow rice and other food staples.

The Municipality of Dumanjug situated 73 kms southwest of Cebu City, has farming, as it’s main source of livelihood for most of its populace. Carabaos are indeed necessary for their farming activities.

To address the needs of the farmers in that municipality, nine (9) barangays were recipients of a carabao each from the Office of Vice-Governor Agnes Magpale through the Provincial Vetenirary Office in coordination with the Department of Agriculture Region VII. Distribution was done last March 6, 2014.

_IGP1245Vice-Governor Agnes Magpale, in one with 2nd District Representative Wilfredo Caminero, assert that carabaos and farming tools are very much essential in farming, hence the assistance.

The project is the result of a meeting the Vice-Governor had with Agriculture Secretary Proceso J. Alcala where she proposed for a provincial animal dispersal program. The DA Secretary then agreed to donate nine carabaos.

Carabao beneficiaries include barangays Panlaan, Bulogan, Paculob, Calaboon, Manlapay, Cambanog, Li-ong, Tubod-Bitoon and Cogon.

Aside from a batch of carabaos, farming equipment for the use of land tillers were given as well.

For those barangays not qualified as carabao recipients, goats will be given to them instead.

_IGP1216Provincial Board Member Peter John Calderon reminds the beneficiaries regarding animal welfare, as it will serve as their partners in livelihood.

Dr. Rose Vincoy, provincial veterinary head, briefly explained the mechanics of the carabao dispersal scheme. She stated that the usual procedure for repayment is that within three years, the first offspring shall be returned to the provincial veterinary for future dispersals.

Meanwhile, Vice Mayor Gun-gun Gica, expressed his thanks to Cebu province for including Dumanjug in their agricultural programs and looking into the welfare of the farmers.

Daghan salamat in a million times sa grasyang amoang nadawat.”

Mrs. Jobel Davide and Provincial Board Member Christopher “Dong” Baricuatro were also present during the carabao dispersal ceremony. Heart Rizarri
