The Cebu Provincial Anti-Illegal Fishing Task Force (CPAIFTF) seized a truckload of prohibited seaweeds Thursday (August 30) night in a checkpoint conducted in the northern part of Cebu.
One of the owners of the shipment, who identified himself as certain Barliso, said the 14 wheeler truck was supposed to transport the said seaweeds from Masbate to their processing plants in Cebu.
He said they have three plants in Cebu in the cities of Cebu, Danao and Mandaue. The truck is now held at the Capitol compound.
Retired Colonel Romeo Tapayan, head of the task force said he heard that the seaweeds were used to manufacture plastics. He said the owner violated section H of Provincial Ordinance No. 2012-05 otherwise known as the “Provincial Fisheries and Aquatic Ordinance of Cebu, which states: “It shall be unlawful for any person or corporation to extract, gather, harvest, Samo/Kapo (SargassumPolycystum) and other Seaweeds species before it is ready for harvest….within the coastal area/zone of the Province of Cebu.”
The ordinance imposes an administrative fine of P3,000.00 per violator plus the additional amount of P1,000 for every kilo of Samo/Kwapo (SargassumPolycystum) and other seaweeds species seized. (Xerxes Alkuino)
