More than 1,000 Capitol employees gathered at the Cebu City Sports Complex last May 24 to participate in the opening ceremony of the Capitol Sportsfest 2014.
Cebu Governor Hilario P. Davide III and Vice Governor Agnes Magpale led the kick off parade that started at the Capitol grounds going to the Cebu City Sports Complex.
This year’s Sportsfest was initiated by Davide himself. He was accompanied by his wife, Jobel.
The Provincial Board Members were all out in showing their support to the sports event. The department heads, including the consultants of the Governor were also present.
In his message to the Capitol workforce, Davide said that he is thankful for their participation. He also wished the players good luck in their respective games.
Magpale said that she is grateful to the Governor for coming up with the said activity. She also emphasized that physical advancement is important in an individual’s growth.
The employees were clustered into eight teams: Executive A, Executive B, AgriMeds, Service Planners, Builders, Legislators, Jailers, and Financiers.
One of the highlights of the kick off ceremony is the search for Miss Capitol Sportsfest 2014. Eight Capitol beauties vied for the title. Jasmine Gonzales of Executive A won. Charlene dela Cuesta of the Legislators finished as the first runner-up while Iris Camello of Executive B was crowned second runner-up.
In the “Pahugyaw” competition, the Legislators whose presentation featured the four elements of the earth bagged the first prize. The Builders, who garnered the laughter of the crowd, won the second prize while the clean and majestic presentation of the Service Planners won them the third prize.
The opening ceremony also featured various Filipino games that capitol employees enthusiastically participated in. Capitol employees bonded and enjoyed in the traditional games like takyan, planting rice, sack race, patintero, and tug-of-war.
As a start off competition, the track and field games were held in the same day. The capitol work force showed their athletic side in the following sports events: shot put; 100-, 200-, and 400-meter dash; and 8 relay (50 meters) and 4 relay (400 meters).
Jenine Basilgo, a staff from the Provincial Information Office, said that the Sportsfest is a good avenue to express the talents of the Capitol employees.
“Lingaw siya tungod nagka bonding ang tanan ug maayo siya for health purposes (The activity was fun because the employees had the chance to bond and it was good for health purposes),” she said.
Other sports events like basketball, volleyball, badminton, table tennis, scrabble, and dart will be played at the Capitol compound.
Hon. Yayoy Alcoseba, the chairman for the Committee on Youth and Sports, in coordination with the Office of the Governor, spearheaded the activity.
