Capitol offers DA lot for new trial court building

A Capitol-owned lot at the Department of Agriculture (DA) compound is available for the construction of a new justice building.

Governor Hilario P. Davide III revealed this after learning the Supreme Court has committed to include the P500 million initial construction cost in the 2015 budget.

Senator Franklin Drilon disclosed news on the funding in an interview over radio station DYAB this morning. He said Supreme Court Chief Justice Ma. Lourdes Sereno assured him on the funding inclusion in next year’s budget.

This will be the first tranche of the estimated P1 billion needed for the new justice building. Sereno requested the province to provide the lot where the new building will be erected.

Governor Hilario P. Davide III thanked Senator Drilon for the help. “We’re happy to learn of this development. As I mentioned, ready ta nga mohatag ug yuta para katukuran ug bag-ong Palace of Justice puhon,” he said.

Previously, the Capitol offered a 2,000 square meter area in the DA compound for the construction of the Court of Appeals (CA) building. But this did not materialize as Cebu City also donated lots for the CA in the South Road Properties.

Gov. Davide also offered the Department of Justice (DOJ) to construct their building at the DA compound near the Capitol. He added that the province would give them more space if necessary.
The governor reiterated his plan to take-over the old Palace of Justice if the DOJ and the Supreme Court will abandon it.

The Office of the Building Official declared the Palace of Justice unfit for occupancy after the 7.2 magnitude earthquake that hit Cebu and Bohol last October.
