The Province of Cebu will formally kick-start its activities in line with the observance of Persons with Disability (PWD) Month on Saturday (July 6).

Series of activities have been prepared by the organizers starting with an Opening Mass at 5:00 pm at the 2nd Flr Legislative building and followed by a “PWD Got Talent” at 7:00 pm.

A basketball game will be held on the following day, while on July 14-21, the PWDs will feature their artworks in an Art Exhibit at the Museo Sugbo.

According to Dean Caratao, staff of Provincial Board Member Arleigh Sitoy, who chairs PB committee on PWD “the aim is to empower our PWDs as beneficiaries of this month-long observance. They will be able to showcase their talents.”

All PWD organizations in Cebu are expected to attend the month-long activities. July 20, a
medical mission will be conducted at Talisay Sports Complex. One of the highlights of this celebration is the “Roll Ironman Race” which will start from the Capitol grounds up to the Fuente Osmeña Circle and back.

The PWDs will also be given the opportunity to find livelihood in a Job Fair scheduled on July 27. Various Companies in Cebu have committed to join the job fair.

The observance of the PWD Month is pursuant to the ordinance sponsored by PB Sitoy, declaring the month of July as PWD Month. Local government units are enjoined to coordinate their programs and activities for the PWD Month with the provincial government. The activity, which was started in 2011, coincides with observance of National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Week every July.

All these are in accordance with Republic Act 9442 otherwise known as the “Magna Carta for Disabled Person” which provides for the “rehabilitation, self-development and self-reliance of disabled persons and their integration into the mainstream society.”
