Various young individuals from all over Cebu Province gathered in the first Provincial Youth Summit held recently in Bogo City in celebration of the World Youth Day 2016.

The summit, attended by about 400 teenagers, aimed to showcase what the youth can do to avoid teenage pregnancy and promote responsible parenthood.

In his message, Governor Hilario P. Davide III expressed concern over the report from United Nations Populations Fund saying that the Philippines is the only nation in the Asia-Pacific Region where the rate of teenage pregnancies rose over the past two decades.

He cited a few cases wherein a 12-year old girl got impregnated last 2013 in Bogo City and a 9-year old girl gave birth in Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center last 2015.

Pipila lang kini sa mga kaso sa teenage pregnancy nga ato nahiaguman ug nagpabilin karon nga dakong hagit dili lang sa natad sa atong panggobyerno apan sa ato tagsa-tagsang panimalay (These are just some of the teenage pregnancy cases that continue to present a major challenge not only in our governance but in our respective families as well), he said.

He added that the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office with the Population Commission conducted this summit to give the youth adequate education and proper knowledge about this teenage pregnancy and how to avoid it.

“Let us help each other to continue to fight this problem,” Davide urged the public.

Aside from discussing the risks of teenage pregnancy, discrimination and violence, the summit also highlighted the attainment of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) through a U40-like teen trail which is universal to the participating countries.

Participating local government units include the towns of Borbon, Tabogon, San Remegio, Medellin, Daanbantayan, Bantayan, Sta. Fe, Madridejos Tabuelan and Bogo City with their respective city and municipal population officers.

The summit was packed with exhibits, SDG Teen Trail, TV advertisement-making contest, infotainment, and mini concert among others.

“Karga” by Cebu Normal University won the 1st Prize for TV Ad making Contest followed by “Inday” by University of San Jose – Recoletos and lastly “A Good Choice” by San Remigio National High School.

On the other hand, PYAP Compostela, PYAP Talisay City Chapter, Placiado L. Senior National High School – Langtad Naga, Inuburan Naga – Naga Enhance High School and Cebu Roosevelt Memorial College Bogo received their consolation prizes. (Cris Lanie delos Reyes with SWU Comm intern Darlene Dacles)
