Capitol gives cash incentives to community “heroes”

Retired barangay health workers (BHW) of Cebu Province each received P10, 000 “cash pabaon” from the Capitol recently.

Forty-eight (48) citizens who had extended health care services in their respective localities were the beneficiaries of the Awarding and Recognition of Barangay Health Workers Elderly Pabaon Program.

Governor Hilario “Junjun” Davide III and Vice Governor Agnes Magpale handed over a Certificate of Recognition and cash award to each of the retirees.

Magpale said the incentives were the retirees’ “contribution (from their monthly allowances when they were in service) accumulated through the years.”

Felipa Bequito, 68, a retired barangay health volunteer who cried when she received the cash, said she had not acquired such a huge amount in her years of service, not even a thousand pesos. “Ako gipasalamatan nga nakadawat ko anang kantidara, kay sauna, wa ko kadawat,” Bequito said.

A 73-year old resident of Dumanhug, Luzviminda Navaja, received her reward through her daughter Grazel Navaja Menguito. Menguito said her mother is in the hospital, suffering from a broken leg. Navaja met an accident while she was bringing medicine for her grandchild who is in the city.

The 76 year-old Ophelia Ampalayo, who was seen happily dancing on stage, related her experiences as a BHW. She said all of her sacrifices paid off. “Bahala’g wala’y pahinungod, basta talent man gyud na nako ang maluoy,” she concluded.

“Kamo nga mga BHW gi-consider gyud namo nga mga bayani kay kamo gyud ang frontline sa pagpanerbisyo,” said Gov. Davide, expressing his gratitude for the service  that the retirees had rendered  to the Provincial Government. (Shayne Carillo, USJR intern)
