Governor Hilario P. Davide III turned over abattoir equipment worth P6.287 million to mayors in 35 local government units (LGU) including the cities of Carcar, Danao and Naga on Monday at the Capitol compound.

Each government unit received viscera inspection table, viscera cart, evisceration platform and electric hog stunner amounting from P176,000 to P250,000.

With health and sanitation as one of the key agenda of Davide administration, the Capitol is finding ways to improve the local meat inspection services in the Province in compliance with the food safety law.

IMG_8376Since 2013, the Cebu Provincial Government through the Provincial Veterinarian’s Office (PVO) has spent at least P16 million on the slaughterhouse improvement and food safety program.

This includes training for each meat inspectors that costs around P35,000.

According to PVO Chief Dr. Mary Rose Vincoy, some LGUs requested for abattoir construction, others needed rehabilitation and the rest required relocation.

Vincoy also said that out of the 51 towns and component cities in the Province, only 37 have slaughterhouses.

“Our office has been assisting the remaining government units to establish their own slaughterhouses,” she said.
