Rotary Club of Cebu and the Department of Education 7 will be hosting a Regional Spelling Competition, the only spelling bee contest in the Philippines, at SM Seaside this coming February 18.

Thomas Magee, of Rotary Club Cebu said this is their third spelling competition since they started in 2014. Contestants in the elementary and secondary levels from 13 districts of Region 7 will be battling their wits as they spell out given words.

He said Cebu Vice Governor Agnes A. Magpale, who will grace and assist the activity in behalf of the Province, will give inspirational message to the contestants.

An advocate in teaching correct spelling, Magee said their aim is to enhance English literacy in both the elementary and secondary school here in Central Visayas.

He said they will be using a  format different from the United States Spelling Bee Competition as competitors here, aside from spelling the given word, will choose among possible meanings of the word to be spelled.

In every round also, contestants will correctly spell more than half of the given words to qualify to the next round.

Champions from elementary and secondary shall receive a cash prize of Php 15,000 each, Php 10,000 each for the 2nd place, and Php 5,000 cash prize each for the 3rd placers.

Consolation prizes will also be given to those who were not able to get a spot.

They will hold the competition at the Mountain Wing Atrium SM Seaside at 10:30 in the morning. (Francis Nacua)
