2T seniors in Samboan benefit from program, receive cash

A total of 2,680 senior citizens from the different barangays in Samboan town received goods and vitamins through the “Halad alang kang Lolo ug Lola,” a joint program of Cebu Province and local government units.

Seniors not only received packs of goods that include rice, canned foods, noodles and vitamins, they also received additional P500 cash.

The goods were shared by different offices. Rice and vitamins were given by the provincial government, canned goods and noodles were donated by 2nd district representative Wilfredo Caminero, while P500 cash was donated by the LGU.

Held at the Samboan covered court, the distribution was led by Governor Hilario Davide III, Vice Governor Agnes Magpale, Caminero, and Municipal Mayor Raymond Calderon on November 4.

Second district board members Peter John Calderon and Christopher Baricuatro, municipal councilors and all barangay captains led by ABC president Emerito Calderon also helped supervise the distribution of goods to their constituents.

Vice mayor Wilson Wenceslao of Santander was also present to witness the distribution.

Provincial officials delivered short messages that were met by loud applauses from the audience.

Program continues to grow

Capitol prioritizes the delivery of health services to the more vulnerable sectors, including women, children and elders.

“Halad alang kang Lolo ug Lola” program ensures that the Cebu Provincial Government attends to the needs and concerns of the senior citizens.

From July 2013 to November of this year, a total of 11,210 beneficiaries have already benefitted from the program. They come from some barangays of Alcantara, Alegria, Oslob, Barili, Dumajug, Minglanilla, Toledo City, Talisay City, Tabogon, Carcar City, Oslob, Barili, Aloguinsan, Consolacion, and Danao, among others.

Although officials and constituents recognize and appreciate Capitol’s efforts for the seniors, they expressed hope for additional services and that the program may continue on a regular basis in their respective towns.

I am very thankful to Gov. Davide who ensured that senior citizens are taken care of. I hope this program will continue and that there will be additional services for us elders),” said Delia Balbuena of Barangay Canonong.

P500 cash aid

Board member Raul Alcoseba recently announced that the provincial government plans to give cash aid to seniors next year.

P250 will come from the provincial government while additional P250 will come from the LGU.

Alcoseba said the planned cash assistance may not be reflected yet in the province’s annual budget for 2015, but said they can make a supplemental budget for this.  He requested all mayors for the list of all senior citizens in their towns or component cities.

Alcoseba is the author of the ordinance Cebu Provincial Senior Citizen’s Council that was created this year and has yet to convene for the first time.
