British Embassy’s GREAT campaign comes to Cebu

The British Embassy Manila is bringing the best of Britain to Cebu.

British Ambassador Asif Ahmad led the GREAT campaign in Cebu on 12 and 13 March, an initiative that presents the best of British business and culture to the world.

“Cebu is vital to our relations with the Philippines. Our honorary consul is based here, and we have a UK Visa Application Centre operating in Cebu City. A number of British companies already operate here, lured by the appeal of the vigorous local business climate and the skilled and productive labour force. We are looking to explore even more business opportunities in Cebu and across the Visayas, and for British companies to bring in new products and services and to tap into local skills and talents to create more jobs there,” Ambassador Ahmad explained.

During his trip, Ambassador Ahmad accompanied a business delegation composed of top executives from Diageo, GlaxoSmithKline, HSBC, MINI, STI and Arup. They met with government officials and the Cebu Chamber of Commerce to learn more about the business climate and the commercial opportunities in Cebu. The Ambassador also hosted a reception in the recently opened MINI Showroom, the first in the country to open outside Metro Manila.

He also delivered a keynote speech at the UK Education Forum in the University of San Carlos. The forum tackled UK higher education opportunities and the Chevening Scholarship, which is the flagship scholarship programme of the UK Government offered in over 140 countries across the globe.

“Our Chevening Programme is looking for leaders that will make a difference in their home country. Cebu has a rich history of great leaders that contributed to nation-building, and we want ambitious, driven Cebuanos to take advantage of the unique experience that Chevening offers – studying in world-class universities and sharing different perspectives with other potential leaders from across the globe,” said Ambassador Ahmad.

As part of the GREAT campaign, Ambassador Ahmad will open the UK in Miniature exhibit (open until 15 March) and launch the Philippine premiere of National Theatre Live: Frankenstein starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller (13 March). Both activities are open to the public and will be held in SM City Cebu.

The GREAT campaign builds mutual prosperity and deeper friendship with the Philippines, celebrating all the aspects of British excellence that bridge business and cultural ties. The campaign showcases British innovation and creativity as experienced through music, food, fashion, film, education, literature, art and design.
